Conservation South Luangwa (CSL) works in partnership with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and local communities to protect the wildlife and habitats of the South Luangwa ecosystem.
CSL supports over 100 community scouts to help DNPW through anti-poaching patrols. CSL’s Aerial Unit provides critical support to the teams on the ground, detecting illegal activities such as carcasses, poachers’ camps, illegal fires and drying racks. CSL’s canine unit was the first in Zambia; the detection dogs can identify ivory, leopard skins, firearms and bushmeat at road blocks, borders and building searches.
Meanwhile, a conflict mitigation team works with local communities to protect crops, working with farmers to set up measures such as chilli-blasting, elephant fences, watch towers and elephant-safe grain stores.

How Tusk works with Our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
Conservation South Luangwa has been a Tusk partner since 2013.
