ANIF’s flagship initiative is the Gashaka Project which aims to protect one of the world’s largest populations of the critically endangered Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee found in the Gashaka-Gumti National Park, Nigeria.
Gashaka-Gumti National Park is also home to nationally and regionally important populations of pangolin, buffalo, leopard, and a wide range of antelopes and primates. However, these populations are threatened by incursions of illegal cattle herders, logging and poaching. In addition, park staff have been under-resourced. Rangers have practically no equipment and as a result, patrols barely take place.
With decreased ranger patrols and a corresponding increase in human pressure, there has been a reduction in the sightings of chimpanzees (and many other endangered fauna), and it is clear that without intervention, the future of the population is in jeopardy. ANIF is therefore working to strengthen ranger law enforcement as well as incentivise community protection of the park’s chimpanzee population.

How Tusk works with our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
Africa Nature Investors Foundation has been a Tusk partner since 2018.
