The Mountain Bongo Project monitors the four forested mountain areas in Kenya where mountain bongos still exist.
Found only in Kenya, the mountain bongo is one of the rarest large mammals in Africa, with 140 remaining in the wild. Local trackers identify the areas most used by the bongos, while camera traps provide images of these elusive animals. The project also works with local communities, setting up Bongo Wildlife Clubs. The clubs run an environmental education programme for schools, using Tusk’s PACE materials and help to set up a range of community projects, including bee keeping, fish farming, tree nurseries and water conservation.

How Tusk works with Our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
Mountain Bongo Project has been a Tusk partner since 2022.
