OELO (Organisation Ecologique des Lacs et de l’Ogooué) works to conserve biodiversity in the Bas Ogooué wetland region of Gabon through strengthening community management of natural resources.
The Bas Ogooué is Gabon’s largest Ramsar Site: a wetland of international importance with over 1,370,000 hectares of flooded forest, savannas, lakes and waterways, which incorporates Lake Oguemoué. It provides important habitat for African forest elephants, giant ground pangolins, western lowland gorillas, African manatee and other important species of the Congo Basin.
OELO’s goal is to improve biodiversity conservation by strengthening community management of natural resources through two initiatives: ‘Our Lake, Our Future’ and ‘Our Forest, Our Future’. These projects support community cooperatives and associations that conserve lake and forest biodiversity and resources for future generations. The long-term aim is to expand the model to other regional wetlands.
Species Protected: Chimpanzee | Pangolin | Western Lowland Gorilla
How Tusk works with Our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
OELO Gabon has been a Tusk partner since 2022.
