We will be celebrating the amazing female rangers around the world during World Female Ranger Week at the end of June 2025, to support their impactful work; protecting wildlife, empowering women and uplifting communities.
We are fortunate to have many all-female ranger teams, along with mixed teams, join in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, including taking part in the physically demanding training challenges, before competing in the 21km race carrying 10kg.
Their responsibilities incorporate anti-poaching operations and law-enforcement, but also include habitat monitoring, environmental education, fire management and aerial surveillance. Rangers assist vets in treating injured animals, help prevent crop raids and carry out ecological research. Rangers often work with sniffer dogs who are trained to detect ivory, rhino horn and pangolin scales.
Within their local communities – in which they are often deeply embedded – they also act as vital educators, community support leaders, emergency first responders and peacekeepers.
The work of rangers also directly relates to 13 of the Global Biodiversity Framework targets that have been set to conserve 30% of the planet’s land and waters by 2030.
Purity Wamuyu heads the all-female ranger unit and was the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy’s first female ranger.
“I joined Lewa in 2012 as the first female ranger on this landscape. I’m thrilled to see many women now taking up space in this profession and look forward to a future where more women are on the frontlines of conservation,” she said
Tusk’s vision is for all of Africa’s rangers to be properly trained, paid, equipped and led, and the Wildlife Ranger Challenge is an effective way of raising significant funding to support rangers’ work.
We are so proud of all rangers and will celebrate all the empowering female rangers during this week.
