Ngare Ndare forest is a lush indigenous forest on the northern foothills of Mount Kenya. Ngare Ndare Forest Trust (NNFT) exists to ensure sustained conservation of forest and the development of the surrounding communities.
The forest is a vital corridor that links the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Northern Kenya to the Mount Kenya forest reserve, and one which elephants have been using for centuries. The Forest Trust manages the forest, working closely with the surrounding communities and organising ecotourism opportunities. Ngare Ndare is one of the few forests in Kenya with an increasing canopy cover, due to the annual planting of over 50,000 indigenous trees from the NNFT tree nursery. The trust supports 10 community nurseries providing trees for agro-forestry and firewood, as well as a local biogas project. The NNFT maintains the key forest roads which connect the surrounding villages, and it ensures that 70% of all ecotourism profits go to support community projects.

How Tusk works with Our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
Ngare Ndare Forest Trust has been a Tusk partner since 2022.
