Lion Landscapes works in critical habitats where there is an opportunity to make a real difference in conserving populations of lions and other large carnivores while also improving human well-being.
Tusk supports its work in Kenya’s Laikipia region and Tanzania’s Ruaha landscape, where they work in partnership with local stakeholders to develop holistic projects that support lions, their prey, the habitat and local people, reducing cattle predation and conflict, as well as conducting research to help guide these activities.
In Laikipia, a comprehensive GPS collaring regime allows hourly tracking of all lion groups. The information is provided instantly to herders through a smartphone app, providing advance warning of when lions are close to cattle. Systems of lights and alarms are also put in place and are automatically triggered by the proximity of collared animals.
Meanwhile, in Ruaha, 15 specially trained Lion Defenders help to identify lion predation risks and ways to address them, and also enable young warriors to protect the community from lions using non-lethal means.

How Tusk works with Our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
Lion Landscapes has been a Tusk partner since 2014.
