Friends of Bonobos, or Les Amis des Bonobos du Congo (ABC) is on a mission to save and protect bonobos and their forest home in DR Congo, through rescue, sanctuary and rewilding.
The Ekolo provincial protected area in DRC is over 117,000 acres and is the only protected area managed by an NGO in collaboration with communities. ABC’s strategy is to work with the government and local communities to tackle the root causes of poverty, and lack of education and economic opportunity, which are behind the greatest threats to bonobos.
The Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary rescues orphaned and illegally traded bonobos, nursing them back to health, before releasing them into the wild at Ekolo. ABC also educates communities about bonobos and helps them build a better future through conservation.

How Tusk works with Our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
Friends of Bonobos has been a Tusk partner since 2023.
