The Lamu Marine Conservation Trust (LaMCoT) protects Lamu’s marine life, ecosystems and threatened turtle population.
LaMCoT was set up in 1992 as a response to the unsustainable harvesting of threatened turtles and their eggs in Kenya’s Lamu archipelago. LaMCoT’s work includes beach patrols, nest protection and payments to fisherman for bringing in live turtles, which are then measured, tagged and returned to the sea. Permanent buoys in the delicate reef habitat reduces the damage from anchors and the waste management project sees daily rubbish collection and regular beach clean-ups.
LaMCoT’s education programme visits local schools, passing on messages about turtles, environmental protection and health, and implementing PACE.

How Tusk works with Our Project Partners
We provide critical funding to enable our project partners to grow and increase their impact on habitat and wildlife, while also enabling, nurturing and supporting collaboration between them, for greater synergy and impact.
We help to increase awareness and wider support for our partners’ efforts, while also sharing important conservation messages, from the vital and varied roles of wildlife rangers, to the benefits of community-driven conservation, both within Africa and internationally.
Lamu Marine Conservation Trust has been a Tusk partner since 2001.
